Aug. 12 - 1874 Aug. 12 Clear and the hottest day of the season I am. This got me After breakfast Steve Bombard & self started down swim in Darcaste's Sail boat & spent the day on the lake going around "800 acre" island as far up as Metallic is. Saw several fish hawks two loons & a few ducks. Did not shoot a single bird though we tried a few shots at the loons with our rifles. On the way down seeing a large bird light on a rock in front of Olm woods home we sailed down on him and I was on the front of shooting when I noticed that he was feeding from a tin dipper and as we ran close up to him he flapped his wings and squaked a few notes of pleasure or recognition. I saw & saw that it was a full grown Barna a gnatula in brown plumage & evidently a tame bird. Very possibly it was raised from an egg taken at B. Pond when this species breeds. A party of angler worm fishermen having deposited on front pool I had no for fishing of late. Our evenings are very quite enjoyable with the company of S. B. W.
