261 Aug. 11 - 1874 Aug. 11 Char and ern lost. Charles Barstow & George Lombard came last night. After breakfast seeing a bird flapping its wings on a drift of smuders below the house, as though unable to rise S. & myself paddled down & found a Sandpiper eating a large fish which he carried off with the utmost difficulty upon our approach. On P.N. we then (S. & B.) started out to try for cock but failed to find a bird. He saw however funnel pigeons back of Pearls's which B. & myself fired at without success. I shot a fine S Philadelphia on full fall plumage but unfortunately I cut it up so badly that it was worthless. We also shot two young Geothejus metups it may be of Phil, which puzzled me completely. They with unlike tricks were darker about the head & rather large. About tricks was homing chirping approximately near the spot & I heard one of the young mtns the characteristic chag 1/ that speaks: Hill Patin violin to the belief that they may be Philadelphia,
