Jan 14. Sat. Feb. 14 - 1914 Went to the cache in Hayes Sound + found everything O.K. being -19° Sunday Feb. 15 1914 Everyone loaded at the carksmith field loads for long trip. Cold and clear. Grounded three Hayes Sound to north side of entrance to Painted Pond + camped there. Going heavy during day. Being -23°. Monday Feb 16 - 1914 Pleased drove my through Painted Pond to glacier arrived early. Rats are were shot for supper while Pie-wah to cut steps in for a glacier for ascent tomorrow Tuesday Feb 17 - 1914 Spent all day dumping our loads up the face of the glacier everyone pretty well tired out with the work. Wednesday Feb 18, 1914 Got all sledges + dogs up to our loads on the glacier + proceeded down the first rise to the west side of the lake. It was a hard pull up the hill. Gene left for Stab telling Joe that the expedition could get along without him. He admitted that the expedition had treated him very squarely.
