9:00 turned east to follow valley. After Saven pass over sand & gravel bar that serves as runway, Bob Murphy made a very gentle touchdown - landing rough only after we were almost stopped and hit some small rocks. Plane needed almost flying speed to taxi; back to beach near tents. I was out about 9:30 in swales, low center polygons & lakes behind camp - to the north, with Dorothy. Area is surprisingly rich, especially after pessimistic reports by Mullen, who called it a "desert." The mosses show an area of high pH, and Jamp made pH analyses from a half dozen lakes - all 8.4 or 8.5. This explains total lack of Sphagnum. However, I don't understand not
