At noon I crossed another range that differed little from the one before. Here a heavy forest of maple, rhododendron, and oaks, covered the mountain densely. No pheasants, squirrels or tigers seen during the day or on the previous 6 days. 20 - No mammals caught in the rice fields. A few man-caws fields were seen here for the first time, as I had not reached the Mekong River and crossed it on a suspension bridge in very warm place some 70 yards wide perhaps. The bridge was swung from two large iron chains fastened into masonry at one side supported around a rocky projection in the cliff. The river here flows deep & tranquil between hanging cliffs which rise 200 feet above, as on either side of the bridge were apart of temple buildings. During the day I saw several rollers # but one.
