The Welling valley is deep Where wheel-travelled. Our tripping place was the village on the side of the valley about 800 feet above the river. From here the road ascended steeply up a rocky gully. It was the most tretch-horsing piece of roadway I've ever met. The bed was composed of hard flinty limestone rocks, well polished by hoofs as smooth as billiard balls. The feet of the fast beasts slipped at every step. My horse fell several trips, with only the empty saddle & Co. the pack-hair-dog gone out on this stretched whin, started for whole hour of calm travel. Above the valley my way continued on three rice-fields in rare-rolls then round small fields villages. Very shortly found a camping-place at 6 P.M. over a few logues amid pine trees.
