USS W. Eastman on radar at
0800. Rendez. at Baker w YS 39 at
1000 hrs. Picked up Standen, under
way to Howland by 1200. Arrived
off Howland at 1500. Landed in
calm surf (2 boats) & set-up camp
by 1600. Began nest count - A
counted & banded RTB.
Rough coral beach w shallow
reef area and sharp drop off
at edge of reef. Giant clams
shells of various sizes (up to 18'
long) abundant on beach & live
ones in reef.
Small 'fruit-flies' common.
Saw many green striped skinks
and a few Geckos.
Garden type orb weaver spiders
everywhere between grass clumps. Saw
2 species small moth larvae.
Small cockroach seen.
Saw 4 RT @ Nend. Appear to
be in breeding plumage. 6 BTC near
beach on coral rubble @ Nend.
1 WT & 3 RT @ edge of surf in same
area.
Hermit crabs all over under
coral slabs & on beach in shade. Most
about size of fist. Some seen
inland.
