had been sighted. Moved away from
ship in raft and laid oil trail
& Wilson oil & squid. Flock of
Wedge tails immediately flew over to
& circled oil trail. We collected
15 WTS & 3 Sooty Tern. Missed a
several shots at Newell's S. But
had a dozen birds still in area
when we secured. This indicating that
birds were coming into area while we
collected. Squid flock was about 20 birds.
12 May 65 Into raft at 0930; engine not
mounted properly & drew out frequently.
Saw 10 birds but got none. Finished
skinning & preparing alcohols.
13 May 65 Broke out new raft, stuck in old
one. Engine mount raised - runs much
better. Saw 8 birds: shot & wounded 1 RAB,
killed Cook's P. - took blood sample from
each. Saw Cook's P. White wedded P. for
first time today. No more Newells seen.
Oil trail effective only if large
conc. of birds is present in area.
14 May 65 Over @ 0830. Saw only 3 birds.
Flux kits & birds painted on it. Attempted
to shot WTB. Blood sample. Bird actually
displayed w. bite. Ran into flock of
