Christmas Island Shearwater= Saw three birds, no evidence of breeding.
Bonin Island Petrel - Saw many 30 - 40 from rubber boat as we left
island at 1800 hours for ship.
Lost glasses, now using sunglasses, under way for Laysan.
September 19--Landed Laysan Island at 0915. Found Shearwater and SI
personnel had been on island for four days and are camped at North end
of island. Lagoon very low. Finches abound around campsite at Casurina
tree. O's yellow-green, Q's drab. Saw 30+ Red-tailed Tropicbird in air
at 1430: one recapture 555-15349 bird threw up deep water fish about
4 inches long - deep blue in color.
Remnants of large Sooty Tern colony all over island - mostly
around campsite.
Counted over 50 seals on west beach before landing.
Obviously many Bulwer's Petrel - one dead at campsite.
Estimated 500 Red-tailed Tropicbird on island. Counted 1400
Common Noddy on beach count.
Population Estimates = to be derived from Shearwater group count.
