September 20--Banded 27 Finches. Shot movies of birds. Broke camp.
Basswood meanwhile picked up jap fishing boat and towed to FFS. We
September 21 boarded Shearwater and met Basswood at 1600.on the 21st. Missed Gardner
September 22 Finches. Arrived at Necker Island at 0730 on the 22nd. Landing
attempt foiled by high seas. Under way to Nihoa Island at 1500 hours.
September 23--Arrived off of Nihoa at 0700. Landed Nihoa from rubber
boat at 0930. Very rough landing. Carried gear up into East Palm gulch.
Saw an immature Frigate hit water. Watched for 15 minutes and flapped
but couldn't get up.
Frigate immature Red-footed Booby, Common Noddy and two immatures
Blue-faced Booby circling ship.
Found Common Noddy (local) and downy Wedgetail chicks in and under
rockledges. Some Wedgetails with body tracts coming in. Many finches,
Fairy Terns, and Blue-gray Noddy.
