June 19-20, Silver Lake cont'd. Robin - Several pairs in area. Still calling at 9 p.m. Nest - in top fork of 10-11' high red fir in semi-open. Nest at 10 or 9 feet. Contained 2 eggs on 19th and 20th. F very skittish, on and off. Base of nest of fresh yellow-green lichen with mud on side and lined dry grass and needles. On nest at 7 a.m. Nest - at 8 feet on south limb of live lodgepole along paved road. F on 2X-5:3 Hermit Thrush - 1 heard p.m. of 19th, and about 11:30 a.m. at least 4 singing loud and clear near camp on 20th. Townsend Solitaire - Ruby-crowned Kinglets - some singing. Warbling Vireo - several, with strong cal ls. Orange-crowned Warblers Yellow Warbler Audubon Warbler Hermit Warbler - nice males seen. Redwings - Brewer Blackbirds Western Tanagers - pairs - male defending territory about camp which appeared to be about kite-shaped, 75 x 150 x 120 x 100 feet in size. Black-headed Grosbeak - few Cassin Finch - several - one F with pine siskins. Pine Grosbeak - 2 apairs seen. Nest on SE side of live lodgepole at 20' high, about 8 feet out from trunk in crotch. F working on nest several times, accompanied by male who stayed away from nest and preened while female worked, etc. Nest ( about 3" across and of fine dry grass, twig base to nest. Pine Siskin - 4 or 5 , 1 with Cassin Finch female. Red Crossbill - 1 pair Green-tailed Towhee - chasing Wood Pewee. Singing at 20 feet in juniper in open. Oregon Junco - many pairs, and observed M feeding nearly 2/3 grown young bird, the only young bird of any species seen this weekend. Nest - in low bank overhang od dirt and grass - F on evening, 7:30 a.m., 10 a.m., and noon. 4 eggs. Chipping Sparrow - 3 pair White-crowned Sparrows - many sallying forth for bugs to 50-60' or so. Fox Sparrow on hillside, singing at 10:30 a.m. from low shrubs.
