June 25-27, Camp Harvey West, Upper Echo Lake, Eldorado Co. Calif. 7400& ' El. White Pelican - 7 Golden Eagle - 1 over ridge east of camp. Mountain Quail - 4 pair I know of. Anna Hummingbird - 1 or 2 Calliope Hummingbird - 1 seen north Rufous Hummingbird - on 9,000' ridge east of camp. Williamson Sapsucker - 1M Sooty Grouse - 1F with 3 young on 9000' ridge N of camp. No adults at nest. Hairy Woodpecker - several pair - 1 nest in dying aspen at 11½ feet,/facing southwest. Hole about 10" deep. Aspen in thicket. 2 young in nest. Banded male, but female flew before I could band it. First flight downward to ground just 40' away. Second flight about 100' to 6' on pine, and third flight across end of lake, a distance of at least ¼ mile. All these flights within 3 minutes of nest departure. This at 1:30 p.m. on June 25. At 9 a.m. on June 27, we noted a pair of Tree Swallows apparently taking over the nest hole, as they went in and out of it while we watched. White-headed Woodpecker - 1M Wood Pewees common - 1 nest on 2½" dead lodgepole pine limb at height of 55'. Limb to north of tree trunk. Webs around it at fork of limb. Tree more or less in open on south slope. Saw one chasing a nutcracker all over. Olive-sided Flycatcher - tried unsuccessfully to locate 3 pairs nests. Tree Swallows - few seen - 1 pair taking over Hairy Woodpecker nest hole vacated by two young on the 25th at 1:30 p.m. Moving in on June 27 at 9 a.m. Violet-green Swallow - 1 seen. Stellar Jay - several pairs - mostly quiet. Chased by Warbling Vireo Clarke Nutcrackers - 6 or 8 about camp - calling often. Some young seen. Chasedby Pewee. Mountain Chickadee - several pairs in camp area. Nest in dying aspen in thicket just SW of pine (lodgepole) forest area adjacent to clearing to SW. Hole at 14' on west led side - apparently an old hairy woodpecker hole. Only ½"-thick tree trunk shell at nest. 5 young facing outward in circle lined with fine material, such as lint. Many feed trips. Red-breasted Nuthatch - few White-breasted Nuthatch - an immature seen. Nearly fully grown, but colors indistinct & dull. Nest at 13-14' on north side of dead lodgepole pine snag. On hill in forest area. Brown Creeper - heard and seen often. Nest on east-running branch of Jeffrey on semi-open south slope. Nest in crack on south side of this down-hanging branch of 6-8" dia. Young in nest at hieght of 30 feet above ground. Adults made frequent visits. Wren-tit - 1 seen and heard on SW slope east of camp, in brush area. Robin - common - only 2 nests found - no young seen. One nest with 3 eggs, fine grass lined, in leaning lodgepole pine crotch at 6' height. Another nest in crotch of live lodge-pole limb running south over open ground at 11' height. 3 eggs. Hermit Thrush - many singing on ridge N of camp at 8:30 p.m. June 26. Mountain Bluebird - 1 seen Townsend Solitaire - 2 pairs Warbling Vireo - common - 1 seen chasing Stellar Jay. Orange-crowned Warbler - 2 Audubon Warbler - 1 female and several full males seen. Macgillivray Warbler - 2 seen in brushy hillside near creek. Pileolated Warbler - several seen and heard in willow meadows. Yellow Warblers - few. Western Tanager - several pairs seen. Cassin Purple Finches common. Pine Grosbeak - at least 2 pairs in area - 1 near Whidden's cabin. Green-tailed Towhees - common on brush-covered south slopes. Oregon Juncos - 2 nests with 3 eggs, and 1 with 3 very small young. All in wet meadow under shelter of thicker grass and rush cover. Depression of cup on ground about 2" in dia. and 1 1/8" deep. Lined with f'ne grass and hair. 3 young banded. Chipping Sparrows - 2 pair Fox Sparrows - few Lincoln Sparrow Song Sparrows.
