Creeper Western Tanager Evening Grosbeak - 2 Spotted Towhee Brown Towhee Junco White-crowned Sparrows June 19-20, 1954, Silver Lake, C.S.H. 88, Amador Co. Calif. 7,200' el. Spotted Sandpiper - 2 pair - 1 where 4 young banded in 1952. 1 at south end of lake in meadow area. Located nest on dry meadow near dirt road - took pic of it with 3 eggs at 3 p.m. on the 19th, and at noon on the 20th - 4 eggs, meaning that if an egg were laid each day, the 1st was laid on the 17th. We had a very difficult time finding the nest, succeeding only after one had returned to nest, and, knowing general area, wegot the other mate to call while flying nearby, and the one on nest answered with single note. Located on slight hummock in rush-grass meadow 15' from road. Cup 2 1/2" to 3" dia. and 1 1/2" - 2" deep. Some grass, chips and leaves lining it. Slight shelter by rushes. Red-shafted Flicker - calling rolling notes often Hairy Woodpecker - pair with nest in 28" dia. lodgepole snag over water at 18'. Hole facing east. Watched hole from 3:59 to 4:25. Snag in shade during entire time. BB hit snag and bird came out at 4:04. Worked lazily 2 trees and in at 4:08 and stayed, but came out much later about 445 to 6:30 or so. White-headed Woodpecker - 1M only. Western Flycatcher - 1 in willow-meadow Olive-sided Flycatcher - used 2 main perched all day. Wood Pewee - one of most common birds in area. Calling all day and last to call at night after 9 p.m. and first in the a.m. before 4 a.m. Chased Warbling Vire. Nest - on top of limb 7' out from trunk to SE on a live lodgepole Pine, atop a knot, at height of 40'. Nest under construction, webs common. 1 bird workin Nest overhangs limb and know. Tree in open. Nest - at 18' on south side of lodgepole pine, live, on dead limb fork 3' out from trunk. Webs, too. Bird working on it. In forest canopy area. Nest at 60-65' on east side of live lodgepone, 8-10' out on fork of live limb, facing wide open area. One bird working, making at least 1 visit per minute with nest material (webbing) from nearby Jeffrey pine. Violet-green Swallow - 4 Cliff Swallow - 6 Stellar Jay - secretive - about 4 Clarke Nutcrackers - 4-6 about tops of red-firs in area. Catching insects there. Mountain Chickadees - heard plaintive notes most of day. Nest - in 4' dia. lodgepole snag, in bare wood, to west at 20' height. Pair Feeding young at about 1 visit/minute rate. Carried fecal sacs away. Nest - in live lodgepole at 4' on E with young in nest. Pic a.m. of 20th. Red-breasted Nuthatch - Several pairs in area. Nest - at 30' in south side of live Jeffrey pine in woods. Young innest. Nest - at 38' on south isde of red fir snag in semi-open.
