October 15, 1950, Farallon Islands, Southeast Group, containing lighthouse and Coast Guard Station, 123°00' W passes through big island of the group, and 37°42'20"N. The Middle,&North Farallons and NoondayIslands comprising the Federal Refuge to the NW were not visited. 1010-1520PST. Hoebell's Grebe - 3 just south of islands - winter plumage. Brown Pelicans - only an occasional flyer, but there were several hundred perched high in the islands, particularly the cone-like east island of the group. Farallon Cormorant - 1,000's on near-vertical slopes as well as on flat island areas. Also 100's feeding in waters around island. After 2 p.m. low flying strings of 35-125 came in from the south and east. Each bird flew behind and a little to the side of the one ahead. One time 2 strings from different directions crossed each other and still maintained formation. Strings broke up as they swept upward to land on the islands. Some of the Baird or Brandt's were also in these strings. Flights were still arriving when we left a 3:30 p.m. Baird and/or Brandt Cormorants - few Cackling Goose - 1 circled boat south and west of islands and flew back to island. Black Oystercatcher - 1 seen on land and another flew around us. Black turnstone - several observed on the wave-washed rocky shore, and also saw 4 or 5 about 100' up island cliffs and slopes on very dry areas. Red Phalarope - one 1 seen - it was turning to winter plumage. Northern Phalarope - there were 1,000's in winter plumage on the waters around the island. Some stayed within 15-20 feet of our boat. All tended to remain in loose flocks or rafts on the water. Heermann's Gull - 1 adult/ 4 immatures on and around the rocks. About 50 seen. Western Gulls - most common - several 100 seen. Herring Gull - 3 or 4 seen. California Murres- about 40 in winter plumage seen around islands. Pigeon Guillemot - only 1 in winter plumage. Cassin Auklet - all in dark winter plumage - would dive at the slightest provocation. about 30 seen - usually 2 or 3 in one small area offshore. Some flew and flopped ahead of the boat with typical duck "wounded" lead-away antics. Rock Wren - 2 or 3 seen on rocks near shore. October 22, 1950, Southside Park, Sacramento, Calif. 1315-1340 PST.
