Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Is.
sail of The lagoon as far as Biegej,
with stops of an hour each at Ebeye
and Biegej.
We looked for birds all along but
saw nothing notable. There were many
Hawaiian Noddies in the lagoon and fewer
than 6 Fairy Terns outside the reef.
A few Plovers were seen in the antenna
field of The loran station on Ebeye and
4 Plover and 6 Tattlers on The lagoon
shore at Biegej.
The village on Ebeye seems very
unpleasant just walking through, though
perhaps the natives are better off (=happier?)
than in former times. All the houses are
patchwork boards, most without paint
and most open along at least one wall
which can't provide much shelter from
rain though it probably serves to let
breezes in. Most homes seemed to
lack furniture beyond beds and all
the household goods, boxes, piles of
cloth, clothes, odds & ends were stacked
helter-skelter everywhere. There are dogs,
chickens and a few pigs wandering about.
We stopped at the loran Station
for a brief chat. The 13 crew members
say they are enjoying themselves. The
