1978 Asphelocoma coerulescens. 7 Jan Berkeley (2591 H:lgard) Pair occupying area around house, present since late summer. Absent in dry spring of past year (pair present 70 SE across Hlgard and beyond to Bay). Gurgle note heard in late October signaling from pair bond. Considerable calling and territorial conflict in late Oct and early Nov, but no gurgles noted during Nov or Dec. Minimum of floaters. Activity again high in past few days with considerable calling and chasing in spells. Today, intermittent calling was as I worked on deck. Two jays in box elder next to deck. One inside tree hopping about silently, the other at the southern periphery, higher, watching the first. A third jay flew in to the SE exposed end, where the second flew into the under the tree and passed upon the first, flapping wings, tumbling them branches, the attacker striking down with his bill, the attacker screaming. About 3 secs of this, the intruder flew directly will out of the territory to west chased by the defender, who called loudly. As this happened, a jay from the NW area to the neighbors,
