NATURE TRAILS
There are four self-guiding nature trails, for which leaflets are available,
within the Park.
Old Boathouse (short): on a wooded peninsula by Muckross Lake.
Mossy Woods (intermediate): in the natural woodlands close to the shores of Muckross Lake.
Arthur Young's Walk (long - 21/2 miles); through the natural wood-
lands on the peninsula between Muckross Lake and Lough Leane.
Blue Pool (intermediate): in the planted woodlands around Cloghereen Pool.
MUCKROSS DEMESNE
The heart of the National Park is the
Muckross Demesne, centred on
Muckross House and Gardens.
Muckross Gardens are one of the most beautiful parts of the National Park. Among the many attractive features for which they are renowned are a fine collection of Rhododen-
dron species and hybrids, and of Azaleas. Many tender and exotic trees and shrubs flourish in the mild climate and sheltered location of the Gardens, around the large expanse of lawns. There are extensive water gardens, and an outstanding rock-garden designed on a natural limestone outcrop, containing a comprehensive collection of dwarf conifers, decorative shrubs and alpine plants.
A pedigree herd of Kerry cattle is another feature of the demesne.
Muckross House, built in 1843, is now managed by the Park authorities and local trustees as a major centre for visitors. Here visitors can learn about the folk-life of Kerry, in the trustees' well-known museum, and about the National Park and its significance. Other facilities include a crafts shop and cafe.
Pedestrians and cyclists have 24 hour access to the demesne at all entrances. Jaunting cars enter by the Main Gate and Muckross Abbey Gate, and leave by the Torc and Dinis exits. Motor cars enter and leave by the Muckross House Gate. Opening times for the admission of jaunting cars and motor cars are displayed at the entrances.
