At Pierson's, 629 Miner Rd, Orinda, Contra Costa Co.,
California
May 16 to May 19 Set up 45 pairs of Longworths
with Ed Heke and Ann Brook on the grassy
hill opposite Pierson's. 5 x 9 stations on
grid. Testing for trap responsiveness of
Microtus californicus ♂>> and ♀♀ to clean
and dirty (♂ or ♀ respectively) trap bedding.
Each station contained a clean trap and
alternate lines of 9 were either ♂ (2 lines)
or ♀ (3). Ann & I returned each morning
(17, 18, & 19) to check for captures - sexed, weighed
and also checked for (or gave) toe clips (see
across). Vole catches were fairly low only
about 2 or 3 dozen animals for the 3
days and some of those were recaptures.
We also got a number (~6) Rutherodentus
and 3 alligator lizards. Both Ann and
I got plenty of practice at handling
and toe-clipping voles. But I still
managed to get a nasty bite from
the last animal I handled.
