P.D. Kell 1984 Journal 3 Manager - gave us a hearty welcome and showed us into the Conference Room where we would bed down for the weekend. The room was very warm despite the icy conditions outside. Day April 20 Awoke at 5 am on account of the glare outside but went for a walk to check out some of Peter Eschrich's study sites - notably the 'Spring' Rockfield, 20 mins walk from the Station Buildings. [the purpose of this trip is to carry out a pilot study on genetic variation in Bushy-tailed Woodrat, Neotoma cinerea towards a prospective dissertation research project. P. Eschrich, thesis of 1977 on the social biology of woodrats at Sagehen.] Eschrich's 'Upper Spring' study site was quite impressive and covered a large area but at 5.30 am was too covered with snow from last night to search for woodrat sign - droppings and white wine residues on the rocks. The girls got up around 7 and we had a great omelette for breakfast. Then Mike (Y.W.) came down and opened up the lab and trap shed for us. We set 4 traps near uninhabited buildings, and 10 more at the Upper Spring Site. Cornhawk traps were used and were baited with a mix of oatmeal & peanut butter.
