P.A. Kelly 1983 Journal Oct., Nov. 17 Freeman Canyon (16 Mi. below Walker Pass), Kern Co., CA (4600 ft.) Got a seat from JLP at c 7.30 p.m. from Albany to Freeman Canyon in the northwestern Mojave desert, arriving around 2.30 a.m.. Catty came along on this trip as well and we stopped in Bakersfield for a cup of coffee and to stretch our legs. Small group on this trip: JLP, Ed Kesler, Mike Gellemann, Ann Brooks, Naomi Walker, Catty and I. On arrival at our prearranged Rendezvous in the Canyon, Patton hit the sack immediately but Catty and I set up our new Eureka Alpine Meadows tent. There was a strong cold breeze blowing, but we slept comfortably in the shelter 'til 7am. Nov. 18 Got up at 7am and spent 20 futile minutes trying to light Jim's Coleman stove. When we finally got it going it worked very well however. After coffee, muffins, fried potatoes and egg fiderade, courtesy of Mike & Ed, we started setting Macabee kill traps for gophers. Catty & I set 25 marking each trap station with an orange flag. Also with Mike G., we set an equilateral triangle of 60 collapsible shermans baited with oatlets. We had 20 traps on each
