P.A Kelly 1990 Journal San Jacinto Wildlife Area, Riverside County, California (1500 ft.) Wed. Feb 7 Ross Goldingay and I set two 100 trap grids across brush/grassland ecotones on both sides of Davis Rd. near the DFG headquarters. Around 10pm captured ten D. stephensi on the grid nearest the HQ, and only one D. agilis on the other grid. One of the D. stephensi was in very bad shape and subsequently died cat #196. He weighed only 53g whereas all the others weighed 62g or more. He was fully zerotal, not hypothermic and no trauma was evident. His cheek pouches were empty (unlike the others) and autopsy revealed an empty stomach and zero body fat. His peritoneum also had a greenish tinge and I wondered if he had a ruptured gall bladder. He also smelled strongly. We informed the DFG, and the Fish & Wildlife Service, and I asked Sarah George at L.A. Co. Mus. if she wanted me to put up such casualties as study skins. Closed most traps because of tight rain. Thurs Feb 8 Reset the 200-traps, and set 30 more at active excavated burrows in plowed areas. Ross and Rhoda Ascancio captured 2 D. stephensi at those
