P.A. Kelly 1989 Journal Feb. 25 Berjona Reg. Park, Contra Costa Co., California (cont.) preparation next week. (Cat. # 193) I called the Nature Area at Tilden Reg. Park and talked w. Lucy. She said they also had come across an otherwise healthy-looking dead gray fox in Tilden recently. So what is happening that we get 3 dead foxes over the space of a week or two? Poisoning campaign? Viruses? July 28 Hastings Natural History Reservation, Pebble Carmel (Fri.) Valley, Monterey Co., California Left Berkeley at 1am (10:00 PST) with Soozie de Mille to map about 50 as-yet-unmapped woodrat houses in and around the long field area. I wanted to do the job accurately [previously I used measuring tape, and compass readings from Jim Patton's Long Field gopher gerid markings]. I also wanted to complete the chore quickly without getting covered with poison oak resin. I was able to borrow a Plane Table, a Hilger & Watts Microptic Alidade and a Stadia Rod from Prof. James A. Anderson (U.C. B., Civil Engineering). He gave me an introduction to using the equipment and I also used "Surveying Theory and Practice" (Davis, Yoste, Anderson + Hilkhail, 6th Ed., 1981 McGraw-Hill) especially pp. 284-290 and 623-625. We arrived at Hastings c. 3 p.m.
