Feb. 25 Bionas Reg. Park, Contra Costa Co., California
(Sat.) Zoo 107/187 field trip to W end of Bionas
Reg. Park (Bear Cr. Ent) to search for
amphibians and reptiles w. Harry Greene.
About 40 Students - TAs: Scott Edwards,
Chuck Yose & ?, Intermittent cloudiness
+ showers with sunshine. At the Bear
Cr. Ent. we noticed 5 Turkey Vultures
feeding on what appeared to be a Red Fox
carcass or
on the N side of the entrance gate.
Two hours later (c. 10:15 am) we found a
gray fox lying in Homestead Field. It
didn't appear injured and although it's
eyes were clear and breathing strong
we felt it was dying from something
(gunshot ?, dog bite ?). I carefully
placed it in a student's backpack and
drove to Berkeley. It seemed to go into
convulsions, scratching at the inside
of the pack periodically. Dr. Shirino at
(2126 Haste @ Shattuck 808-5041)
the Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital took a
look at it and could not detect any
reflexes whatsoever. He concluded that
it had severe neurological damage poss-
ibly due to strychnine poisoning or tetanus.
He put it to sleep with an injection of bar-
lituate to the heart. I brought the body
to the MVZ for an autopsy and specimen.
