Dec. 18 Hastings Natural History Reservation, Carmel Valley
Monterey Co., California
Left Berkeley at 0730 PST with Sooji de Mille
(200163/183 Student). Stopped off at Rosita's Armory
Cafe in Salinas at 0900 for breakfast. Sooji
drove the HVZ's (stick-shift) Chevy Blazer
so I could leave the Toyota Pick Up with Cathy.
Picked up $46 of groceries in Nob Hill Foods
in Salinas. Arrived at Hastings at 1105 PST.
Cool all day long (max 63°F), cloudy and
overcast, more rain threatening from 1230-1600
(in shelter unused)
we set pairs of traps, baited w. horse feed
and supplied all w. bedding at [illegible] houses
(H41 to 100D approx.). Found 2 new large
houses: [94A] at base of Arroyo Willow
across creek (N.W. of) H. 95; [92A] about 2 m.
S. of H. 92 under A. Willow and Blackberry.
H. 54 has been reactivated. Didn't check any
traps in the evening.
Mon.
Dec. 19 0625 Started checking traps. Damp night but at
least it didn't rain and the rats were snug in
the wooden shelters w. bedding. We caught 36 rats with
one double capture at H. 71. Could not locate ♀2250
or ♀[illegible]1347 (ie 2272) - 2 old surviving matriarchs.
Caught nothing at 5 houses - ie. 87½% trapping
success. Didn't finish until 0935 PST.
In the afternoon we set 5-2 sets of traps
at Hzes 1 - 100C. Retrapped only 50, 51, 60, 61, 62, 66A,
66, 73, 89, 94A, 97, 98, 100 C.
