June 29 Got some pointers from Jim Griffin on (cont.) mapping the vegetation along Big Creek.
July 1st Saw a large Crotalus viridis along the lane - it was about 36" in length and 2-3" in diameter. It entered the long field lane-side vegetation between woodrat houses 136 and 139.
July 14 Museum of Vertebrate Zoology
Walter Koenig brought me up 2 woodrats he captured in his garage at Hastings: ♀ 1350 (captured during the week) and an untagged jw. ♂> (captured last night). I made study skins from both, prepared partial skeletons and took tissues (liver, heart and kidney) for genetic analyses.
Walter also captured jw. ♂> in a mouse snap trap during the week. Dave Ribble said he would put it up for me and save the tissues as well. ♀ 1350 had 5 pups in the left horn of her uterus and 3 in the right horn. That suggests that she has had 3 and possibly 4 litters this year.
I think ♂> (Cat# 186) is ♀ 1350's mate and is therefore the probable father of the two juvenile males.
