May 29 of campers out of the park. We decided to stay.
(cont.) In the afternoon, Cathy and I took a nice hike to Soda Springs then south through the meadow and back along H.120. The snow stopped periodically and the vistas were spectacular. There was a lot of bird activity around the Springs: - Brewer's Black Birds, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Killdeer, Flicker, White-crowned Sparrows. The Bellings squirrels were spectacular in the meadow. They alarm-called at our approach as we followed the trail across the meadow. They were also very conspicuous as they raced, chased and scampered through the snow. They all look around the same size. Are these only males? Have the females emerged yet? Didn't see any predators at all on the meadow, although
(worship to Peggy)
we did find some coyote scat along the Dana fork yesterday. Terry Hoore (Les +
Peggy's field assistant) and Glen Fredericks
(Humboldt St. Grad Student doing a Masters
on introduced Ptarmigans) joined us for
dinner (fried chicken w. Garlic+Poblano, potato salad,
green salad, beer + mulled wine + brownies
- such deliciousness) at Les + Peggy's cabin.
Stopped snowing by c. 10p.m. destined to be
very cold tonight. Cathy + I slept on Les + Peggy's floor.
