P.A. Kelly 1988 Journal Thurs. Hastings Nat. Hist. Res., Carmel Valley May 26 Monterey County, California 9am. Left Berkeley with Shellie Kalane, and arr. Hastings c. 1:30 p.m. after stopping off in Salinas for supplies. Showed Shellie around the Reservation and around 3pm. (1400pst) we started setting traps. We set pairs of traps at 37 active houses, between H.25 and H.98. We found a small (c. 1" long) owl pellet on top of the trap shelter at H.50. It probably belongs to a Saw-whet owl (saw one at H.79 last time) and contained the remains of a small cricetid (Reithrodontomyx ?). We also found a new house (or rodent den - Spermophilus ??) in the base of a Red Willow about 30' up, from H.32 - designated it 31A for now. 20:30 PST.: We started checking traps. Earlier than usual, because of the number of traps and houses involved. Also since it was bright with a rising moon, trap success would not be so great anyway. 21:04 PST: H.82, Tagging new juv. ♀ 1972-73. ♀ (♀ 1491) watched us (+ T.R.) squeaking a lot. Her mother and 2 other rats (in brush near H.85) tail-rattled in response as well. 21:48 PST: H.62, Tagging new juv. ♀ 1974-75. Squealed in protest. Her mother (♀ 1465-66) actually came out of H.62 and came across a few ft. of her ground to smell ♀ 1974 in Handling Bag. Got to bed early + returned to Berkl. in the am.
