P.A.Kelly 1988 Journal Wed. Feb.17 Hastings Nat.Hist.Res., Carmel Valley, Monterey Co., California Waits in Berkeley for Steve Dobson's (he used to work? in Hastings on Beechey G.Squissels, H.S. out of M.C.S.B.) MVZ lunch on life-history variation in Columbian Ground Squirrels. Interesting stuff. Left Berkeley at 3pm, arr. H.N.H.R. at 5.45 p.m. (1745PST.) Started (1800 PST.) setting traps immediately from Hze.1-62. New moon tonight so expect a lot of captures. Brought a new Sanyo Microcassette Recorder (Model 5495, $60 at Sierra Imports on Haste St.) to use during behavioral testing [My other Sanyo Radio- Cassette Recorder Model H1770 (also from Sierra Imports) is too large and unwieldy]. Finished setting traps by 1835 p.s.t., dark twilight at this stage - used head lamp to aid in setting traps. Found fresh pig shit near creekbedley H.62. Jupiter + Venus in Western Sky. 2238 Lot of activity in Spider Tree, saw growing woodrat on branch beside H.6 - it's untagged. Will place traps actually up beside all four active lines (H.9 disintegrated and collapsed over the winter) tomorrow. F 2269 + F 1460 were in same trap. Left a few traps [at 11,15,22,36,51+58A]open. Thur Feb.18 0715. See 9 deer halfway up Haystack: chasing and facing-off against each other. Still lots of Varied Thrushes around. 0940 Checked the G.H. Owl nest just N.W. (V.OakSrag Hole) of the "lowerBridge" on the highway. No owls again this year
