P.A. Kelly 1988 Journal 4th, 5 (c. 2" x 4" x 2" high) desert iguana encounter (cont.) arena with her. We brought the arena down field to H2E 88 to test some of the D>0 there. We checked the other traps first then at midnight we attempted 2 diadic interactions. We all had previously studied Wallen's description of N. fuscipes' behavioral repertoire (Anim. Behav. 1982, 30(4): 1171-1182). Joanne spoke directly into my tape recorder (we initially planned for 10 mins of observation) while Karen + I shone our white (no red lights available) head lamps on the pair of animals. We dusted one lightly w. orange pigment and gave both at least 5 mins to get used to their side of the arena. We first paired up D>1192 (277g, unmarked) and D>1336 (251g, marked). Both are scrotal and have active Ventral glands, but D>1336 (bite?) had a wound on the inside of left hind leg. D>1192 was clearly dominant to D>1336 (see Diadic Encounter Sheet). We saw a number of the behaviors described by Wallen, most seemed agonistic although Wallen classed some (eg. "climb On Other") as affiliative. The second diad between D>1557 (237g, unmarked) and D>1505-06 (267g, marked) was a failure. The rats did not interact at all but just huddled up at opp. ends of the arena. Probably stressed by noise and light from the 3 observers. Got to bed around 01:30 PST (a.m.).
