P.A. Kelly 1988 Journal Thursday Feb. 4 Continued surveying for and marking active houses on Haystack Hill. Didn't find too many. Most are associated with G. ageri-folia in and along the ravines. Trapped lower long field (Hze 102 to 209). Bright moon lit night (like Tues, + Wed night). Didn't catch too many rats, so left a lot oher and went to bed early. Fri Feb. 5 Checked traps from 0700 to 1800. Caught 7 woodrats at the 10 "new" houses on Haystack. One of them (D>1/11-12 @ H. 221) was tagged at Hze 201A on Sept. 26 (he weighed 213g then, now 256g, gain+43g). Old Dasyurus (spotty D>1/31-32) is still around (H. 119A), his odd coat color hasn't caused his demise yet. I also caught a new Q (1570-71) at new Hze # 228 (just S. of lst crossing). In the afternoon I cleared access to some more Hzes on the side of School Hill (between opposite+ H. 130 and H. 123). Set pairs of traps at 5 of those houses (designated 501-505). [The Haystack Hzes merely continue the 200 series from the crossings along the lane and N.+ W. up onto Haystack. The markers are just 4' Bamboo Plant Stakes with a numbered metal tag wired and duck-taped to the top.] (senior grad student in Psych.) Joanne Pedersen and Karen Klein (Zoo 163 student last fall) came down from Berkeley in the evening. Joanne brought her large
