P. A. Kelley 1988 Journal Hastings Nat. Hist. Res., Carmel Valley, Monterey Co, Calif. Tue. Feb. 2 Came down to Hastings yesterday evening. My first chance to check on my woodrats in over a month. I was in Ireland from Dec 23 - Jan 17 and I was busy as Associate for Zoo107/87 for the past 2 weeks. Some more branches have fallen along the creek, the most notable one is at H. 32. ? 1256 seems to be taking advantage of this wind fall by expanding H32 westwards. Various other bits of willow and oak down near H.34, H.73, H.111. Also more bark-peeling at H.71, 87 98, 111 and others. Took a few photos (slides) of H.32, bark-peeling, bark-damage from rutting, and a small Neotoma nest exposed in a hollow of a broken Willow between H.111 + H.116. Lots of passerines foraging along the creek W-crowned Sparrows, Co-crowned Sparrows, lots of Varied Thrushes. Also plenty sign from pig-rooting in the long field Traffed traps 79-98: Seems to be some o > o> competition going on in that region of the creek. Wed. Feb. 3 Closed the few traps I left open all night, but caught ?1436-35 at H.97. Tried to clear some access on Schl Hill near crossings but Poison Oak is very dense in places. Traffed from H2e 32 - 79.
