Hastings Nat. Hist. Res., Carmel Valley, Monterey Co.
California
Thurs.
Dec. 17 Left the HVZ at 0930 and arrived at Hastings at
1230 after stopping off in Salinas for some
groceries at Nob Hill Market. Frank Pitelka,
Walter Koenig (currently in Tempe Arizona with
Janice), Ron Carroll (Nat. Res. System) and
Dave Wake were also at the Reservation discuss-
ing the issue of housing for the new manager
(Steromberg?) with Jim Griffin and Suzanne
Scheller. All 6 visited Stanbach & P at
the Red H2e. I guess we'll get kicked out
of here in the near future.
From 3-5 pm, I set pairs of traps at
all active houses between H.25 and H.98 (inclusive).
37 Houses in all, or 74 traps.
The stormy weather of the past week
cased some damage in the long field. E.g.
Red. Willow limbs have fallen at H.96, H50
and upreech from H45. No damage to any
house though. Seems to me that the weather
has also stimulated a spurt of nest
building. Noticed extensive peeling of Willow
Bark at H2e, 98, 96 and 66A.
Dec. 18 0430 Got up and muffled up against the cold,
before starting to check traps. Finished at
0730 PST, Caught 27 woodrats. Collected Feed
Pellets from 9 of them: 27-158 pellets (x=77)
(280F)
