P.A.Kelly 1987 Journal Hastings Nat. Hist. Res., Carmel Valley, Monterey Co. Thurs. Nov 5 0800 left Berkeley, 1200 arr. Hastings after stopping in Monterey for Supplies and a bag of C.O.B.. Still raining off and on with grey overcast skies at Hastings. 4from 3-5pm set traps (in shelters) at 210, 209, 207, 204, 202, 201, 120A, 118, 117, 114, [119A], 102, 103A, 101B, 101A, 100C & near 100A. I used my new 20' extension ladder for the first time. Used it to investigate a hole 15' up in a Red Willow over H.120. Could see droppings and nest material in the [illegible] (sheltered) part of the cavity. Also from my lofty vantage point, I noticed a new Hzc in Bramble & Rhus between 120 & (defunct) 119. I am calling it 119A and I set 2 traps there. Around 5 pm walked by the Robertson Place to Martin Rd. in search of S. scrofa. Rained and drizzled the whole time. Didn't see or hear any forkers. Fri. Nov 6 0500: Overcast morning, stopped raining, bright, full moon setting behind Haystack Hill at around 0600. I only caught 7 woodrats but I caught a 55g jw? (1534-35) with her Mom! (? 1380-81) at H.210. I also caught a new ad? (1538-39) and a new ad? (1536-37) at new Hzc # 119A. I had dacron bedding in all 36 traps and all 7 rats were mug. Collected 4 fecal pellets from the 5 shelters.
