2200 PST. Muffled up I went out to check the 23 pairs of traps - (in shelter)
set at Hze 26-76.
Nothing at 68, 69, 71, 73 & 76. Very bright
but overcast too, bit'4 Moon up in Southern
Sky. Also heard a group of pigs foraging
and squealing downcreek (maybe Pearson
Field or under oaks near Hze 180 C).
Decided to pack it in and come out early
and bring the rifle for the pigs.
Sat.
Oct.31
0420 PST Started checking traps again. No
sign of any pigs however. Caught 13
woodrats (6 ?: 7 ?) in all and collected
all their feces from the bottom of the
trap shelter boxes. Ranged in pellet
number from 7-110. It occurred to me
that I could estimate Neotoma activity
if they defecate at a fairly constant
rate. First I must find out what that
rate is and then I can estimate how
long each animal has been in a trap. I
also want to use the fecal pellets for
dietary analysis. It would be useful
to know the passage rate and whether
they are coprophagous as well.
I caught
a new ? (# 1521-22, 223g) at Hze 60;
? 1233 moved upfield from H50 to H26 ; ? 1382-(1523) moved
across long field from H.134 to H64; ? 1404-05 moved from
H.331 on School Hill to H.136 or lane side of long field.
