P.A. Kelly 1987 Journal Hastings Nat. Hist. Res., Carmel Valley, Monterey Co., C.A. Thurs 24 Sept. left Berkeley c. 10:30 am, arrived Hastings c. 2:30pm after stopping off in Salinas for supplies. Reservation is very dry. Poison Oak is red and losing all its leaves. Heard from Ray? and Mark Stanback that the Blue Oaks and the Valley Oaks are producing plenty of acorns. It will be interesting to see if the woodrat breeding season will start up again and track the acorn crop like the Acorn Woodpeckers. Started setting traps around 5pm. Set 1 Tomahawk at each active Hze between Hze 4 99 - 53 traps in all. Found some skin + bone - including marmot with teeth - of a jaw. Neotoma on the ground below Hze 1B (i.e. right at the Y). But who is the mother of this specimen (Cat # PK 169)? Could be either F 2267 or her daughter F 1188. lot of Coffeeberry rods in fox scat. 4mi. 25 Sept Got up at 4am (0300 PST) and went out to check traps. V. dark (New Moon 2 days ago) and the dense fog was precipitating as a fine mist. 9/13 Ad. FF were perf and 2 were lact. also caught 2 new jaws. Went over to the Robertson Place (Mark + Shorty's) around lunch to look for old woodrat middens in the rock outcrops. Instead saw a young boar rooting for acorns under
