Sagelen Creek Field Station, Nevada Co., California
Feb. 14
Drove to Sagelen in the morning with Catty, Jeff + Debbie Groth, Claudia Luke + Suzanne Morse also drove up. Part recreational and part field study.
Joe Thornton told me that he traffed B# 1273 in the Field Station kitchen on Feb 3, 1987. He translocated the B. Tail to the Rockslide.

About 6 more inches of snow fell last night. (Our 3 pick up trucks are out at Hwy 89, we hiked + skied in (not me C.) I used snow shoes to inspect the U.S.Piny lot of snow, couldn't see any rat-sign. Ditto for X89 which I checked in the afternoon.

Jeff finally managed to net 3 crossbills (he had a decoy bird in a cage). He weighed, banded, recorded their call notes and released them. Lot of crossbills around of at least 2 call types: Types 2 + 5 (J.Groth). Seems there's a good crop of lodgepole Pine Cones.
We paid Joe Thornton $4/person/night. He loaded all our gear in a big sled behind his snowmobile and towed it to the Hwy. Heavy Traffic all the way to Auburn. Got back to Berkeley at 6pm.
