July 17 (cat) Bishop 3515' quad 4144N, 376E.) where Tom had
seen a lot of whitewash. Much of the
'whitewash' seems to be a calcareous (?)
component of the volcanic rocks there. But
there is also a lot of bird feces, esp.
especially Barn Owl, on the rocks. We did
however set 11 tomahawks baited with
C.O.B. at woodrat middens. These are
probably Neotoma lepida though.
July 18
Collected the 11 traps around 8 am. We
caught only one > Neotoma lepida. The
tip of his tail had white fur. (Albinism
of the tail tip as in Aphodimus?) We
released him.
Later on in the afternoon we went
'touring' with Tom in his GMC truck. We
drove to the end of the Rock Creek Rd
but found no woodrat sign on the
few rockpiles we checked out. We cont-
inued N. to the Mammoth area to see
the mirasets and the proposed expansion
of skiing facilities.
July 19
In the afternoon we drove to Fish
Slough (N. of Bishop) to see the Desert
Pupfish reserve. We bumped into Phil
Fister (the inspiration behind pupfish
conservation) in the local Safeways. [I]
was very impressed with an HV2 lunch.
