April 1, 1986 Hastings Nat. Hist. Res., Carmel Valley, Monterey Co, CA.
Left HVZ @ 1.30pm, arrived Hastings 4.30pm
after stopping off in Salinas for supplies. 4 from
5-6 pm set 2 traps (limited w. COB) each at
H2os 1, 3, 25, 47, 49, 51 ; 4 @ H 50, 453/56 ; 6 @ 5-9;
and 1 ea @ 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 22, 23.
Saw a med. sized Bobcat in good condition
bound across the Highway (G16) about 2 mi
north of Martin Rd.
4 from 8-11pm caught 11 rats (see Field Notes).
Also had a 13g juvenile in trap with F 2267-1045
at H.1. Appeared dead (very cold, didn't detect a heart
beat), however it recovered in the warmth of my
breast pocket. Fed with a little milk and returned
in a tissue nest to basal entrance of H.1 @ 10.49pm.
April 2, 1986 Was still there but dead the following morning
at 6 am. Took Liver, Ht & Kidney for tissues and fresh
as a skeletal spec. (cat # 131).
10.15 AM.
Sedated F> 2253-1062 (H.19) with Metofane (Methoxyflurane)
and attached a radio-collar (AVM [illegible]) SH1
with Hq-575 battery + loop antenna around neck). I
also used a (trimmed) 5 1/2" cable tie (potted beneath
transmitter and battery) for secure attachment.
Once the rat recovered, placed in 14"x12"x6"
cage with cotton, COB, H2O & some Valley Oak leaves.
Started eating, but continued to try to remove
the collar.
