P.A. Kelly 1985 47 Journal Oct. 25 Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey Co., CA. Part 2 of Zoo 163 Fieldtrip to Hastings. Jim & Betsy left at 10am with their vanloads. I took the later crew of four students at 12:30. We got to Hastings at 3:45 pm after a 15 min stop for lunch in Salinas. On arrival Jim decided to run the Calhoun lines again this weekend. I took a crew of 4 to do the Pearson Field line, while Betsy did the School Hill line and Jim took the largest group of Haystack Hill. We also set 20 Toma hawk traps for ground squirrels mainly on the Noyce Property. We have decided to mark the Beechys with numbered ear tags and colored hair dyes for behavioral ob- servation. Jim also set mist nets at the Cow Pond and caught 1 Lazurus. We all were amazed with the clarity of vision through the night vision goggles, thanks to a prac- tically full moon. Oct. 26 Jim wished us" out of our leags at 7 am After breakfast the Calhoun lines were checked: as usual the Chaparral line was the best, and the Meadow line the worst. We tagged and marked one ground squirrel, also caught 5 more throughout the day. In the evening we lifted all 35 squirrel traps and then set them with 25 more for woodrats along (Bob Jones gave me 22 more non collapsible Tomahawks.)
