Oct. 11.
Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey Co., CA.
Left MVZ at 5 pm with Cathy. Traffic on the
Nimitz Freeway (17) was heavy and slow. Got
to Hastings around 8pm. After dinner went for
a walk and showed Cathy just how effective
the MVZ's new pair of night vision goggles are.
Unfortunately we didn't see any deer or
carnivores for actual viewing.
Oct. 12
After breakfast
we got 57 old wood & wire woodrat-house
markers (a la Lindsale & Tevis) from the
Big Barn. With those, we proceeded to mark
all the active-looking houses along the
north-east side of the long field. Around
10am we saw a Golden Eagle circling over-
head and being mobbed by a Redtail. We
used up our last marker near to h.f.t.'s old
(#57)
Hx #74. After 6pm we set 31 Tomahawk
traps, baited with peanut butter/oatmeal
mixture, at the first 31 (east end) of those
marked houses. Lots of birds around: Western
Bluebirds & Bushtits, some Phoebes too. In
the barn I earlier found a large woodrat
trying to hide by burying its head, ostrich-
like, in the corner of the a trash box. Many
of the traps, incidentally, contained the
mummified remains of mice. There were also
Black-tailed
about 3 dozen Mule Deer in the vicinity.
