P.A. Kelly 1985 41 Journal. Sept. 28 Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey Co, CA. Drove to Hastings (150 mi) in the morning with Catty. We called in to see Walter Koenig before starting to survey Hinsdale and Tevis' old woodrat Study Site along the northern edge of the long field. We used maps from Hinsdale & Tevis' book The Dusky Footed Woodrat (U.Ca Press, 1951) to locate the sites of many of their 150 rat houses. Many of the old wire and wood markers were still in place although, in many cases, they were no longer legible. Most of h. & T.'s houses have vanished and in places, the suitable habitat has contracted. Sept. 29 In the morning we continued our survey of the long field. In all we counted about 60 houses without searching too hard. This is probably a gross under estimate, but it will shortly be revised when I start individually marking rat houses. I had a look around the old barn and found 57 of h. & T.'s old markers which can be used for starters. There are also a lot of h. & T.'s 'young' traps on the upper floor of the barn. There are also, apparently, a few woodrats living in woodpiles in the barn itself. We returned to Berkeley in the early evening.
