(fresh woodrat sign). On the way up to the
Peaks Site we flushed a Nighthawk from her
scrape of a nest on the ground. She had
2 young chicks (each about 2" long) and
was back on the nest when we were coming
down again an hour later. Took some photos.
We also set 5 traps at X89. Then
rebailed the 20 traps at U.C. Spring
with the help of Pamela.
June 21
Got up at 5am to
check all 50 traps. At 5.15 am I found
collected an adult ♀ porcupine 0.35mi
north of the Nevada Co. line on Hwy 89
PK # 118: Erethizon dorsatum 790-200-95-35
= 9500g, ♀). I thought she was pregnant
at the time since body was still warm and
supple, but she was only bloated after
her nights foraging. After the Sagelen Research
Symposium, Ellen Woodard helped me to
open her up and remove the smelly contents.
Our audience of field assistants stared
wide-eyed and 'nose-tied'.
