June 15 Bodie State Park, 10mi E. Hwy 395 (SE Bridgeport)
Mono Co., CA.
Left MVZ at 6.30am and
headed to Bodie via Hwy, 13, 580, 120, 108
and over the Sonora Pass (9624 ft). My old
Comet just about clunged over the Sierra,
had a stop for an hour to let her cool
down through. Arrived at the Park 3.30pm,
met Jack Shipley (standing in for Brad
Sturtevant - who I phoned last week). Said
it was okay for me to set traps at the
Noonday & Red Cloud Mine Tailings (about
a mile south of the Ghost Town). Also
said he hasn't seen any woodrats here,
few pikas as well, but lots of marmots,
any Belding's ground squirrels. Checked
out the 2 big Tailings and some small
rock outcrops, but saw no woodrat sign.
I suppose it's not surprising since sage
brush is the predominant plant here.
Decided to set some traps regardless.
Set 12 around the base of the Noonday
Tailing, & 13 around Red Cloud. While
setting the traps a Golden Eagle passed
overhead with a Cottontail (?) in its talons,
landed on summit of hill (2nd from right)
south of Noonday Mine. Camped at Noonday,
made dinner & hit the sack at 10pm.
