at the L. Spring. Seems there are currently
only 4 woodrats in the vicinity of the
field station. After lunch I went to Truck
ee to stock up on gas & supplies. Then from
3.30 - 7pm set all my 25 Chipmunk Traps
at rockpiles (Mile 4.2, H.9.4, & H.9.7.- see
Escherich's thesis). Set 10, 5 & 10 respec
tively, although in nearly all cases, the
woodrat sign was old. Also checked
out Mile 12 (near Sierraville). Saw 2
Red Tails (Mile 9.7 - H.12) and also some
Calaveras Warblers at Mile 9.7.
June 5 Got up at 6am & drove north on Hwy 89
to check all the traps. Got nothing at
Mile 9.4 & Mile 9.7 but got adult ♂ & ♀,
and two subadults at Mile 4.2.
Took the 4 animals back to the Field Station
for Sedation, Weighing, Ear-Tagging and Blood
Sampling. Used Metofane (Hethoxyflurane -
Pitman-Moore Inc) Inhalation Anesthetic.
Would prefer a faster acting inter-peritoneal
injection of Avertin or some other harm
less anesthetic. Put in toe clips in case
of loss of ear tags, also took 8-10 heamat
ocrit tubes of blood from the toes.
