Jan 25 Berkeley Aquatic Park, Berkeley, Alameda Co.,
California.
First 107 fieldtrip of 1985. Led by Ned Johnson,
Claudia lube, Beth Baker, Jeff Groth and
Myself. We met about 1/2 the class at 8 am at the
Park and split them up into four groups of
about ten each. Ned came along with my group
since I do not yet know all the American
birds. It was fairly overcast all morning
and temps didn't rise above 50°F. Despite the
close proximity of Interstate 80 there were
still a lot of birds to be seen but mainly
ducks & waders of course. Most of the students
had never been bird-watching before so I had
no problem teaching them. We saw Eared Grebe,
Red Billed Grebe (many), Black-crowned Night Heron,
Snowy Egret, Great Egret, Mallard (few), American
Widgeon, Northern Pintail, Ruddy Duck, Canvasback,
Redhead, Greater Scaup, Surf Scoter, Common
goldeneye, Bufflehead, Red Breasted Merganser,
American Coot (many), American Avocet, Killdeer,
Black-bellied Plover, Willet, Greater Yellowlegs,
Dunlin, Least Sandpiper, Ring-billed Gull, Herring
gull, Forsters Tern, American Kestrel, Mourning
dove, Anna's Hummingbird, Bushtit.
Returned to campus at noon.
