of the fieldstation to the south fork of the
Sagalen Creek where there was much evid
ence of Beaver activity. Lots of damming
and Aspen felled everywhere. Arrived there
at 5pm and sat down to watch the lodge
nearest Sagalen (at 'Jan Seventeen? sign). At
6.30 pm saw 2 Beavers emerge, they seemed
to know I was watching but one just ignored
me, swimming around rose above water,
and feeding nonchalently on a recently
felled Aspen. The same one had a tag in
his right ear - (Ellen Woodard's study, UCB
Wildlife Dept), he once came into shallow
water immediately below me, stood up,
and gazed straight at me before returning
to his [illegible] felled Aspen. The other one spent most
time going in and out of the lodge.
Returned to the field Station in the semi
darkness and saw a number of Mule Deer
bounding out of range.
10.10pm Went up to the Upper Spring Site to check
on all 14 traps - Only got 1 Bushy-Tail,
but got 2 Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels
and a Chipmunk. The bait was gone from
all traps so rebaited with leaves of lettuce.
Didn't check lower Spring or the Rockslide.
