E.L. Kaulbach 1954 journal (24) May 29 White Wolf Meadow, 8400 ft., Yosemite Natl. Park, Mariposa Co., Calif. reading 067.4. Weather clear but cool. strong breeze. Byla calling. arrived here 12 noon (Pottolas & sagoage rocks) Next stop a meadow S side of Trogas mine Road (070.1) Presquise Flats, 7950 ft., Y.N.P., Mariposa Co., Calif. speedometer 76.5. Tyysa locality for species. Virtually no level ground near public campground. Go E about 1/2 mile. The gentle S slope toward the creek has runoff flow. little wood for cover and very little rodent browsing. Row adult seen in stream. Snow patchy covering less than 1/3 of area described above, Presquise Creek Campground (79.1), Snow Flat 82.2... level, 2/3 rds snow covered. I didn't take time to stop at Snow Flat. It looks like good camping area. Arrived Tuolumne meadows 3:15 p.m. loaded my gear in a packboard and hiked about 4 3 miles up Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne. Broad- Broad valley opens up at this point. The river is high. Only small patches of snow remain under the lodgepole pines bordering the valley. deepuge pools numerous as well as rivulets and streams cutting into the main river. strong wind. Evening clear and cool. I tramped through the meadow area bordering the stream. Only Byla found and there very few. Lyell Canyon still overall brown with dead grasses but the new air temp -30e. May 30 green grass is to 2" tall. 7 a.m. I hiked to lower Lyell Base Camp and fished 1 mile downstream. Limit
