June 15 200 yards E Tsiiga Boss Ranger Station, 9900 ft., Private National Park, Tuolumne Co., Calif. Recordings attempted at deepest of lakes in area. 9:15 P.M. (D.S.) This is sure pond I collected female and young frogs by this afternoon. Two (>) canorus hand calling, one on E ad one on W side of lake. First (Toga #2) 1 1/2 (?) minutes of Hyler with toad coming in from 50 yards across lake. Neither toad trilled from 9:15- 10:15 P.M. but gave sporadic long series of notes, each series lasting 8-13 seconds. I would estimate about 3 notes per second. Temp. 10:05 P.M. 2" above damage, dead grass -0.1°C. Water temp at edge of lake where 1 1/2' deep, 2" below surface 15°C. I could not get close to either male toad. They cease calling when I get within 10-20 yards of them. My mincing them may start their calling but not consistently. One young or female frogs seen during check 2/3 rds way around edge of lake. First frog actually seen 10:25 P.M. at edge of another large pond about 150 yards SE Station. In shallow water, a depression in sand 14" from deeper (14") water of pond. Measured 12.6°C. Water 9.8°C. Suspect toad located eye by my hand during taking of temperature. I had hand are adult (>) a half hour earlier from this vicinity. Toad calls came through well only when Hyler eased eye. Air temp 3.8°C. at this pond edge. Ended night check 10:50 P.M.
