EL Kalstein 1954 Buffy Jones (54) Oct. 17 Detail mdr, 1/2 mi. S of Cart. Center, Ya. Valley 4000 ft., Morgan Co., Coly. Final max-min for season an 92-26° C. Soil surface 79-27° C. Weather station cleared out except for cover to thermograph tube which I left in position. No water in meadow now. Western golden reddish brown, leaves just beginning to fall. Black oaks just slowing fall leaf change. Most 1/4th yellowed out, some at NW margin of meadow are overall greenish-yellow in appearance. Tules of meadow grass (half matted due to deer & wind) all dried out but lower half of shoots still greenish. Grasses green back under locchan beneath yellow pines. Western thistle and brockan dry. Done dew this 3 A.M. 9:00. Air temp 3" above stratus ground 48° F. Dry sky with light striggy stratus clouds except for high fog-like formation to east above and behind Half Dome. Sunshine bathes most of meadow 9:15 A.M. Micrates active in bunchd grasses. Still joys numerous oak border. 4 deer (does & young of yen) stirred me this part of meadow. No food seen in this area last night 10:30 - 11:00 P.M. Air temp 6" above ground was 9.5° C. Pathway across meadow saved as of early September.
