E.L. Karlstrom 1954 Buffer loreuz (32) May 28 Stoneman meadow, 4000 ft., Yosemite Valley, Mariposa Co., Caliy. in these pools. 11:50 P.M. I returned and collected samples of tadpoles. One remnant of a pool in the former ditch paralleling the footpath water level was dry. 12:10°C.; air 10.5°C., 12:10 P.M. (D.S.) One small pool 2' x 'x 2" deep contained ≅ 500-800 toad larvae (few Hyla). I counted 40-50 dead at the puddle margin. The pools in Pond A average 1" depth. Hundreds of tadpoles (nearly all Hyla) are congregated where there is water. Meadow hazy from all the comfics. No breeze; gusses heavy with drops of dew. Weak Hyla chasing. Constant traffic cars & people may inhibit them. May 29 Cardinal meadow, ½ mi. S Gard. Center. Air max-min 12:30 P.M. 84-37°F.; present 50°. Soil max-min. 74-46° F. Present 52° F. June 3 Stoneman mdw., 4000 ft., Yoz. Valley, Mariposa Co., Cali Pond A now almost completely dry. The total amount of water left in 3 shallow depressions would total less than ½ gallon! Bottom of pool is still soggy with water bound in the soil. Toads present ad floundering in each tiny depression. The largest 15"x8"x 1" must have less than 25 toads, mostly Hyla. Bird chasing and the absence of dead toads over the bottom of the pool point to extensive avian predation, probably robins. Mosquitoes are thick. Time 7:05 P.M. All the water dry and B (the ditch paralleling the footpath) has dried up except for one small puddle 30"x16"x 1½" deep. She is swimming with Bufro tods. Will collect samples tonight when night check made of this meadow.
